Over the years, I’ve owned several “radar detector” units. One was an old “Maxon” brand the other a Uniden RDXL. Times have changed and so has the sophistication of radar. Now there is pulse, laser and a slew of other technologies. This moderately priced unit attempts to cover all the bases and does so with a mixed degree of success.
I’ve been using the Cobra XRS 9960G for several weeks and have installed it in two different vehicles. I don’t deliberately speed to test the effectiveness of radar detectors but can say that this unit did notify me of radar, mostly X-band, ahead of the time that I saw the police vehicle. Sometimes I got quite a bit of warning, other times I saw the police vehicle at the same time the detector warned me of the presence of radar.
I got what I would consider a normal amount of “false” alarms. Well, they aren’t really false alarms, they are alarms caused by Door Openers on grocery stores and things like that. I remember my old detectors going off all the time, so I don’t know if that means this detector is more discriminating in some way, or just less sensitive. Hard to say without having sophisticated equipment to test the device in a controlled way.
Compared to say a Valentine detector, it is not nearly as capable. For instance, the Valentine will actually indicate in what direction the signal is coming from. This is incredibly helpful information and this device does not give you that much sophistication. It either goes off or it doesn’t.
The menu system was adequate but not excellent. I did like the voice alerts and I also really liked how the volume of the alert was high at first, but quickly ramps down to a much lower volume automatically. Nice feature.
The display brightness was disappointing in daylight conditions. At night it is fine, but in daylight is gets washed out rather easily and is difficult to see. I preferred to keep the display “on” all the time but there is the option to have to turn off after a selectable period of time. It would come on automatically after that when an alert sounds. I felt that the icons used in the display to represent certain functions looked like second-rate clip-art.
The GPS “add-on” unit is goofy. I understand that because of a lawsuit by a competitor that had a patent on an internal GPS combined with a radar detector, that Cobra had no choice but to have the GPS component be external to the actual radar unit. But this is really ridiculous because the unit is quite big and bulky by itself, and then to have an additional appendage sticking out of the side is just about too much. It does work pretty well though and gives accurate speed readings of your vehicle as well as accurate latitude and longitude coordinates. I live in an area that does not seem to have any dangerous intersecion/speed trap warnings in the database that is provided as a free subscription to owners of this unit. I can’t comment on its effectiveness in that area.
Overall, I enjoy having this thin layer of surveillance installed in my car. If nothing else, it reminds me occasionally to check my speed and be more mindful of it.
On the downside, the unit is really large and bulky. The windshield suction mount is cheesy and seems ill-suited to the heft of the unit.
I’ll give it an OK rating of 3 stars.

i went by 2 speed traps and the fuzz buster warned me up with a shriek well in advance
some false alarm but the sound is different so you get used to the real alarm pretty quick

Since this product is expensive and sometimes Cobra has good product therefore I thought it would be a good purchase. but I am very disappointed, I mostly receive false alarm and usually when there is a police or emergency cars around there is no alarm. To me this product is useless. I hope it is one particular case.
